Today is a new day! This is the only day that counts!
The snow came. Just not what they said. And I never heard the wind blowing once. Blown out of proportion by the media again! Our temps are going up quickly this week. We are going to have three days in the 50's, the snow will be gone in a day or two. School was cancelled though. Great! Now that just means an extra day in May.
My daughter turns 40 on Saturday. How can I be the mother of a 40 year old. I can't be much more than 25 myself, can I? Why does it seem that everyone else just gets old around us. Sure, my body won't do what I want occasionally, and my brain processes things a little slower. Inside my brain I am still 25. I feel like I can do anything that I ever did. I still feel like a sexy, viable woman. How does age sneak up on us like this?
Working out and watching what I eat is the key to feeling like I am as young physically as I feel mentally. By keeping my body in great physical shape I can live a more productive life. I can do the fun things with my grandchildren. I can hang out with my adults children and enjoy doing things with them.
I see lots of people my age that barely leave their house, and don't move much at all. They are the ones who get old mentally. On my trips to Europe with the high school kids this last year, we were on the move 12-15 hours per day. Walking constantly, and climbing. I was able to keep up with them and totally enjoyed myself. By the end of the week we were all exhausted. When we got home everyone was worn out. I'm sure the kids had a much quicker recovery time than I did though.
There were a couple of places that some people had to stop and rest. When we climbed Montmartre to see the Basilica of the Sacre Coeur, and see the Artist's Square.
Some people sat out the climb up Mont St Michel. I made it to the top to see the view. It was absolutely worth it.
I walked up to Neuschwanstein Castle. The tour guide warned us it was a hard climb. The long walk up to it was a little slow, but I started out early and didn't spend as much time in the shops. I was one of the first ones to the top. I did make a stop about three quarters of the way up and have a little round donut. The tour guide raved about them and said everyone should stop and try them. He was right. My son and I shared and order. My son stayed with me, he was worried that I might have a heart attack. I had exercised all last spring and most of the summer, I really didn't have many problems climbing.
My whole point in all of this is that if you exercise and stay healthy you don't have to feel old. Being healthy is the key to enjoying life. I plan to use this as my motivational tool. As my children get older, I need to work harder to stay healthy.
I am 58, overweight again, and trying to get healthy. I am blogging about weight loss and everyday issues for women. My blog will include ramblings about the daily life of a mother, grandmother, wife and friend. I would love to have you come along for the ride!
I totally agree. No WAY do I feel old enough to have a 15 year old grandson!!! And Mont st. Michel is -I think- the most amazing building in the world. Didn't see it in my 8 hour trip to Paris (one day venture off the transatlantic cruise with my mom a few years ago)...but it WILL be on my next trip! :)
ReplyDeleteYes it is about 4 or 5 hours from Paris. It is the greatest place, you will love it!
DeleteWe got about seven inches of snow and a snow day. I was supposed to sub at school but didn't, obviously.
ReplyDeleteRecently I read that wearing your hair to your collarbone is supposed to be youthful. That's where yours is in the picture. You're on trend! :-)
Thanks, I hadn't heard that. It just seems to be comfortable to me. I'm sure we'll be back to school tomorrow around here.
DeleteThanks for the reminder for me to keep my butt moving. I turned 40 in October and need to bump up the excercise routine in my life. I need to be able to keep up with my 8 year old and 5 year old. Good post!
ReplyDeleteGood for you! I can only hope that when my little bear turns 40 I will be able to post about an awesome trip to Europe where I kicked a good hikes behind! =) Great pics too.
ReplyDeleteI am sure you will. I truly enjoyed seeing the new places with my 18 year old son.

DeleteYour photos are beautiful and this post is so honest... I know that the more active I stay, the better I feel overall. The last year I have been working from home and moving around much less - I know this has impacted me.

DeleteYou have such a great attitude! I always say, "You HAVE to age, but you don't HAVE to get old." Old is a state of mind, and I hope to stay sharp-minded as long as possible. The foods we eat does play an integral part in all of this, so I should probably stop eating so much Taco Bell. LOL! In any event, I applaud your honest words and am following you back. Thank you for leaving such kind words on my blog.
ReplyDeleteXOXO,
Meredith

ReplyDeleteThanks for following Hope! And that's for the beautiful compliment! Excited to get to know you!
DeleteWhat a lovely post Betty, the snow looks gorgeous! I can empathise to an extent, my eldest turns 18 in September and I don't know how that happened! (Don't throw a shoe at me, I know that's not as bad as having a 40 year old, but it will come!). I also attribute a good sense of humour to staying young. I'm married to a 51 year old kid. Glad you found me, I'm restarting my healthy eating on Wednesday, so will be good to visit and have some tips and words of wisdom!
