How to Eliminate Sugar From Your Diet!!

Make sure to take a look at My Weight Loss Blog Directory!!!

Staying away from sugar

My husband decided he needed to bake cookies this evening.  As you all know I have removed processed sugar from my diet.  Of course, it is possible to eliminate all processed sugar, because it is in so many things.  He asked me to watch his cookies and make sure they didn't burn.  I went into the kitchen to check on the cookies.

The smell of the cookies was intoxicating!  I loved the smell.  I didn't want the cookies.  I took his cookies out of the oven and let them cool.  After they had cooled I put them in a baggie for him.  I didn't even feel the urge to taste one.

Why is that?  I think it is because I have had sugar out of my diet for long enough that it doesn't seem to effect me any more.  Previously, I was a sugarholic.  I could sit and eat a can of frosting with a spoon.  I have always been so addicted to sugar.

I know some people are heavy wheat eaters, eating things like bread and chips.  Those have never been a problem for me.

Here is a video that I found very interesting.  It is made in Australia and it is called Sweet Poison.  The man in the video describes the destructive effects of sugar and how to lose weigh quickly simply by eliminating sugar from your diet.

How Can You Eliminate Processed Sugar From Your Diet?

1.  One of the easiest ways is to eliminate sugar-filled drinks.  Most people need to drink more water.  There is really no benefit from drinking soft drinks.  Fruit juices and sports drinks are full of sugar.

2. Overhaul breakfast.  Most cereals are full of sugar.  Pancake syrups, jellies, and breads are all loaded with sugar.  Have an omelet.  There are some great recipes for make ahead eggs that you can reheat quickly in the mornings.

3.  If you are eating processed foods, check the labels for sugar and carbohydrate contents.  Carbohydrates turn into sugar.  If you really take a look though, you will see lots of your usual foods have a high sugar content.  Look at the labels on things like barbecue sauce, ketchup, canned baked beans, and many others.  You may be surprised at the amount of sugar that you have been eating.

4.  Of course, you need to give up the obvious things like desserts.  Cookies, candy, cakes, pies and all high sugar desserts.

Sugar is hard to cut back on.  It is much easier just to cut out process sugars completely.  I am sure that there are some things that you might not be able to completely give up, but if you can get rid of most of the added sugars you will see a big difference in your weight.

I am not a doctor or a nutrition specialist, but I know that eliminating processed sugar will help you with your weight loss.  My 18 year old son has always struggled with weight.  He was a chubby boy.  He has always been very athletic.  He played sports year round from the time he was really young.  In high school football at one time he was 6 foot and weighed 221 pounds.

My son would go through 2 a day practices and work hard for hours a day and he would lose 10 to 15 pounds.  As soon as he slowed down again the weight would come back.  He did get to the point that he was down to around 200 and was staying there.  He was cutting out many foods and still not getting his weight where he wanted it.

Earlier this year, he decided to give up processed sugar for Lent. He drank Diet Coke for several years to try to cut calories.  He started drinking only water and milk.    He has always been a milk drinker. I know that has sugar but he didn't really think about that being a source of processed sugar.  He lost weight during  Lent.  He ate Bananas Foster on Easter.  It is one of his absolute favorites.  That was his splurge.

The next day he went right back to his restrictions on sugar.  He is now at around 180 pounds.  He has absolutely no belly and has dropped from a 36 waist to a 32-33 waist.  He hasn't really cut back much on any other foods.  He does cut back a little on breads.  He will only use one piece of bread on a sandwich and he tries not to eat many sandwiches.  He still eats fried foods.  He and his buddies go eat hot wings pretty often.  He eats pizza, tacos, and all the other foods that teenagers eat.

Now, he is still very active, but that hasn't really changed over the years.  His real change was eliminating processed sugar.

  1. Congrats to your son, and damn that husband making you watch HIS cookies. I swear to God he is trying to sabotage you, and it makes me mad for you, Betty. :(

    1. I really don't think he is trying to sabotage. I think he is just clueless sometimes. My son and I just shake our heads at him at times.

  2. I think it is admiral if you can eliminate processed sugar from your diet... I know I have decreased it to a very low number... however; I find it is more difficult to do this with children... I am hoping by having very little in the house that she will cut back out of necessity :)

    1. I feel like it is what I have to do to get my weight down permanently. If you can eat some and do okay then that works for you. If we can help our children all the better. Each person has to decide what is right for them.

  3. I have been cutting back on soda, and it has made a difference already in my weight loss. The calories in sugary drinks is horrific!

    1. Good for you!! Soda just really doesn't help us in any way. It's funny since I haven't had any in over 3 years, I really don't want it. I don't think I will ever pick up another soda to drink. I was a huge diet coke drinker before so I don't know what flipped the switch, but I am glad I gave them up completely.

  4. Betty, you inspire me. I am struggling right because I am addicted to sugar, I work out at least 3 days each week. I see my legs and arms are toning up nicely but this muffin top won't shrink! I'm not sure if I have the willpower to get rid of sugar. I know that I store fat in my stomach area and I know in order for me to shrink this belly fat, I have to change how I am eating. I know all of these things, I just need to take action.

    1. I have known this for a long time. I gave up all this stuff a few years ago and lost all my weight. Then at one point I started up again and gained it all back. I think this time I am on a lifetime change. It's something that you just have to make the decision to do. Only you can do that, and when you are ready. I hope the encouragement will help you make the changes in your diet.

  5. Very informative post! I've been using honey more and more, not more if it, LOL, but in place of sugar. And now I have my hubby on board, as he has allergies and we are hoping that eating local honey will help!

    1. I am not ready to try honey yet. When I get my weight down to where I want it, I may add in some honey. Many of the paleo recipes use honey. I hope the local honey helps with the allergies.

  6. When we make cookies, it is usually for a function, and then we bring ALL of them there, and leave them there. We rarely make cookies anymore, and if we do just for home, it is 2 dozen, not 6 dozen like we used to do. Husband is not helping you to make cookie aroma in your home. He can just buy a cookie somewhere if he wants one. I think you're doing super great, Betty. The story about your son was wonderful. Research says that being slimmer helps people that age fit in, and make a bigger salary as adults.

    1. I am really trying to get him to improve his diet. He keeps telling me when I son leaves for school he will start working on it. I know that is just a delay tactic, but I hope he will start soon. When I went to the store today he asked me to bring him healthy snacks.

My son is almost to thin now, but I am sure he will figure out where he needs to be. His confidence has increased so much. He was never fat, but he always felt like he was fat. My other children were all very thin growing up, so I wasn't sure how to handle his weight. I really think he ate less than my older sons. It's all the sugar in everything now. As soon as he started avoiding the sugar the excess weight dropped off.

  7. I truly believe that the more wheat and sugar we cut from our diet, the less we crave. Experts would have us believe differently but I know for a fact that cakes and cookies don't interest me any more. I still enjoy "primal" treats though and feel no guilt what so ever!!

    1. I think that is so true. I used to look at a picture of sweet foods and feel the saliva increase in my mouth. Looking at a picture of food really doesn't affect me now. I think I want to try primal treats when I get my weight down.

  8. It never fails that my husband will pull something like that. I know what you mean though, you have to have been away from something for long that you don't crave the taste. Good for you for not even trying it.

  10. I never thought about my dies sodas sabotaging my weight loss. I may have to re-think, yet again, my food and beverage choices. I have been drinking more water, adding cucumber slices or orange, lemon and lime slices. I do still have one diet soda with lunch. Hmmmm....

    1. I haven't had any kind of soft drink for about 3 1/2 years. I don't think I'll ever have another one. When I am somewhere and don't have a water choice, I will sometimes drink lemonade, but no other cold drinks. I don't drink lemonade anymore since I started THE 100 diet. I do believe diet soda makes you want to snack on other foods.

  11. Sugar isn't hard for me, but eliminating all gluten still can get to me :) Gluten is in almost everything since malt syrup in used in so many things. Plus it's in things that you would never think of like sauces, ice cream, etc. I have to read everything and even sometimes still have a reaction since it was processed with wheat. It sounds like your son is doing a great job, good for him!

  12. My 11yo is def addicted to sugar. And my husband is just as clueless and will buy things and I just shake my head at him. Then he tries to justify it by buying sugar-free and I'm like that's not any healthier. Thank goodness I LOVE water and when I need a good carbonated drink I usually grab a Perrier. It def quenches my need and gives me a big, hearty burp! LOL

  13. Betty, sugar truly is the devil, and that devil shows up ALL over the place. After reading several books on sugar addiction, I decided last November to cut back drastically on sugar. The results were nothing short of amazing. My waistline made a return appearance, and my skin looked marvelous.

I haven't been 100 percent faithful to those restrictions, but I'm still on the lookout for sugar, even in fruit. Pineapples, mangoes and grapes are the highest in sugar.

Good luck to you and your son as you continue to monitor your sugar intake!
