Sugar Mountain
Do you think about how much sugar is in the foods you eat? Are you climbing a mountain of sugar excess? Would you sit and eat teaspoonfuls of sugar?
I bet you would really think about it before you ate sugar like that! If you knew the amount of sugar in some of the things you consume daily you might really think about it before you decide to eat or drink them.
Did you know a 12 oz can of Coke has 39 grams of sugar?
There is approximately 4.2 grams of sugar in a teaspoon. That means the can of Coke has close to 10 teaspoons of sugar in it!
If you looked at that in sugar cubes, you would have over 9 sugar cubes. Would you sit and eat 9 sugar cubes in one sitting.
Probably not! Yet you might think nothing of drinking it down in that Coke.
How about a Big Gulp? How many people do you see carrying around those large Cokes they pick up at the gas station? Those things have about 91 grams of sugar. Do the math! Here you are looking at around 22 teaspoons of sugar.
There are many items that are full of sugar. How about a 20 oz bottle of Minute Maid Lemonade? It contains 67 grams of sugar. Almost 16 teaspoons of sugar. Don't you just want to grab one up and swig it all down?
How About Some Sugar With Those Fries?
One Tablespoon of Catsup has about a teaspoon of sugar. How many Tablespoons do you use to dip your french fries or pour on a burger?
How about some sweet Barbecue Sauce?
How about some sugar for breakfast? Pour me a glass!
Some of the high sugar processed foods fall in the following categories: Packaged cereals, Applesauce, Canned Fruits, Salad Dressings, Instant Hot Cereals, Spaghetti Sauces, Juice and Fruit Drinks, Flavored Milks, Yogurts, and numerous other processed foods.
Are you ready to reduce your Sugar Mountain Yet?
Are you eating a mountain of sugar each day?
I have been really really good on Primal eating. I am 98% grain free, and about 90% sugar free. However, you will have to pry BBQ sauce out of my cold, dead hands. I will make many healthy choices...and have. I will not give up BBQ sauce though. That said, I only have it about twice a month, so that isn't too bad. ;)
ReplyDeleteI really like BBQ sauce too! It makes meats taste so much better. I guess if you can get to your goal and stay there and still eat BBQ sauce then it's not a problem for you. Yes, it's all about limiting yourself on things that you feel you can't give up.
DeleteWow! That really puts it in perspective. I have given up most of my breads, but sugar....I am still working on that! :) But I don't drink sodas! That was huge!
ReplyDeleteI hope things are going well with you! Have a wonderful weekend!
Thanks Frances! Yes, not drinking sodas is huge. I gave them up 3 years ago. I can't even imagine drinking them now.
DeleteAwesome post Betty! I've actually got a post going up on Friday about sugar as well. It's so important to understand where sugar hides in processed foods.
ReplyDeleteI have to read that post!! Thanks for your nice comment!
DeleteHi Betty, I don't do processed sugar anymore and will be cold turkey when I stop using processed Stevia. Thanks for including my blog in your directory:)
ReplyDeleteI was happy to include your blog! I love finding great weight loss stories.
DeleteIt's not surprising that there is so much sugar in soda, but I was surprised by the amount in ketchup. Oh, I won't give up barbecue sauce either! :)
ReplyDeleteI don't think I really like the taste of most meats without something to flavor them such as BBQ sauce.
DeleteGreat post Betty! It's no wonder we get hooked on the stuff!
ReplyDeleteYes, isn't it crazy!!
DeleteI've never been a big soda drinker but lately I've been craving slushes from Sonic. The thing tastes like it's pure syrup. It's scary thinking of how much sugar you can take in a day and that if we dont' keep our guard up we will be powerless to resist it.
ReplyDeleteMaybe you can just think about all the sugar you are consuming. That should ruin your appetite for the slushes!
DeleteSugar's in some pretty sneaky places!
ReplyDeleteYes, sneaky, sneaky, sugar!!!
DeleteThis is very interesting and shocking really! It's a good thing I stay away from most of the foods you've mentioned with the exception of packaged cereals. What a great subject to share and thanks for linking up to The PINcentive Blog Hop! Hope you're having a great Wednesday :o)
