Would You Fall For That?

Would You Fall For That?

Would You Fall For That

There is a new show on ABC this season called "Would You Fall For That?"  It is an interesting concept in that is shows that most people fall for what's known as the "herd effect".   People tend to follow, or believe things that are presented to them with authority or that others around them are believing.

In one test they took a nine year old girl who had never painted on a canvas before and had her paint some "artworks".    They put her paintings on display.  They then created lots of social proof to convince people that they were looking a fine art.  If they had hung the pictures in an elementary school people would have assumed they were done by an elementary student.

Since these paintings were hung in a Soho art gallery people made the assumption that they were created by a very creative artist.

People "fall" for it.  They believe they are done by an artistic genius.  People are serious impressed by her artwork.  A man said he was willing to pay $26,000.00 for a canvas with a circle on it. Most people "fell" for it hook, line, and sinker.

There are many experiments and it is hard to believe that people "fall for" them.

Do You "Fall" For It Every Day?

Are food manufacturer's are convincing us on a daily basis that they have our best interests at heart.  They get "authorities" to go on television commercials and tell us how great the food they have manufactured are.

They find cheaper ways to make the foods by adding chemicals to them and then they convince us that these foods are great tasting and healthy for us.  The chemicals do things like enhance the taste or appearance of food and preventing spoilage.  They can put things on the shelf for long periods of time and they don't spoil.

There is an estimate that over 10,000 chemicals are allowed in human food.  Of course, theses are all determined to be "safe".

There are three ways a food manufacturer can get clearance to add a chemical to it's products.

  • Self determination, by the manufacturer.
  • Petition the FDA
  • Notification  (from 2006 to 2010  97% of the chemicals were cleared through the FDA using this method.)
In addition to chemicals, they have added more and more sugar to the products as the years go by.  They have also added High Fructose Corn Syrup to many food products.

Do you really want to "fall"  into the herd and just accept whatever you're told?

How about making a choice for real food?

Would you fall for that

Real food is simple.  It is just foods that grow or have been alive.

Your best choices in real foods:

Fruits and vegetables, preferably from local farmer's markets or from organic grocers or just grow your own.

Grass fed or locally grown meats, such as, beef, chicken, and pork.

Milk, and Cheese.

Eggs, Wild-caught seafood, and Nuts.

What's your choice?

I am trying to make my choices for real foods.  It is difficult to buy all non processed foods.  I live in an area where local foods aren't grown year round.  It is also more expensive to buy some of the real foods.  I am trying to make a permanent change away from the "herd" effect and make the best choices for myself.

  3. With you 100%! A recent follower of yours, I'm all for REAL food - have been for years, actually, especially when looking after my late husband, who was allergic to chemicals - particularly in his food. Keep it up, it is possible and it really does taste so much better, as well as being better for you.

    1. Wouldn't it be nice if they made real food less expensive and more available.

  4. Oh that art gallery example just made my blood boil (that's why my business is so hard. Just drives me insane.) But on to the food point, I think it's nuts how little real food there is in a grocery store now. Staples are hard to find, but boxes of junk are packing the aisles. I also live in an expensive area where real food in concerned (actually, even the cheap junk costs more here than most places.) So, I do the best I can. It may not be organic ($12.99 a lbs for organic ground beef? Uh, yeah, not happening) but it's in the same ballpark.

    1. Oh I bet that would bother you. You are such a fantastic artist and to see that happen.

Organic is almost impossible to afford in everything. I have been trying to add what I can. If more people would start using the price would come down, but then they have to be able to afford it to begin with.

  5. Since I have been eating healthy, I pretty well eat food that is real, vegetables, fruit and meat... I do eat whole grain items... I have been staying away from processed food and I eat very little sugar that isn't natural :)

  6. So true Betty! We blindly believe everything we see. We have been conditioned to "follow the crowd", no matter where that crowd is leading us. We must take reign of our food choices, before we become a society ridden with sickness and disease. Thanks so much Betty and thanks for linking up...have a wonderful weekend!

    1. Michell, I wish we had more support from our government on making food healthier, but it's all about the profit margin.

  7. I love this! It's so true! I have been doing my best at eating real food as well. It's a challenge, but I feel so much better when I'm eating real foods.

  8. Hi Betty! I love the story about the 9 year old artist! I've got a good fall-for-it story too ... a friend of mine works at the Perth Mint where, in addition to coins, they also sell a lot of expensive jewelry. She herself is still at university and although she always dresses nicely, she has to do so on a limited budget. One particular day she was wearing a pair of earrings at work that she had bought for $10, which looked like they were made from gold and diamonds. She was serving a lady who was looking for a pair of earrings herself in a section where all the jewelry was priced at $20 000 and above. After deliberated for ages, she said to my friend "I just can't find anything that's right for me. What I'd really like is a pair exactly like yours. Are you still selling that design?"(!!)

    1. I love your story, it certainly goes along with the theory that people will believe whatever they expect things to be. Your story would be a great example for their show. Maybe you should suggest it on their website.
