Diamonds - A Girl's Best Friend??

My husband has decided that I need a bigger diamond for raising such a wonderful son.  I already have a little over a karat.  He took me to the jeweler today to look at stones.  He wasn't happy because he thought the ones they had were too small.

He wants one that is more than 2 karats!!

Usually, the only jewelry I wear is my wedding/engagement ring.  I am not a big jewelry person.

The new diamond would be pretty expensive.  Should I let him purchase it?  I have been trying to decide whether I should try to talk him out of it.  It's a lot of money to spend.  If I just tell him no I will hurt his feelings.  He thinks he is doing something really nice for me.

I have been thinking it might be a good investment.  I don't think they lose their value.

I know if he purchased it for me it would have lots of sentimental value.  I love my ring I have now because he bought it for me.

So, what do you think?  Do I encourage him or do I try to discourage him?

  1. Diamonds Betty are a girls best friend!!! Mine is 2.26 and its beautiful. My husband paid cash in the diamond district in NYC and got a great deal. It's sorta a man thing too..he is proud that he has worked hard enough to afford such an amazing ring. Your marriage has been a success and it sounds like you were an amazing wife and mother and you deserve it...congrats!

    1. Thanks Lisa. I think you are right. He wants to show off the fact that he has worked hard and can buy it for me. It is important to him. I just don't understand putting so much money into something like that, but if it makes him feel good it will be fine. I like traveling, I guess that is where I like putting money.

  2. Maybe there's something else that is permanent that you'd like and he'd see as a way to honor you - a camp on the water - or a trip to an exotic locale, hot or cold, for just the two of you?? Or he could buy you a condo on The World, and you could set up a webcam for me :)) http://aboardtheworld.com/ When it was in Eastport, Maine, this past year, it soared and soared above any buildings in town. Had gone thru the Northwest Passage earlier.

    1. Sounds like you think like me! That is my idea of splurging!

  3. That's definitely something to pray about. It may be a good investment and I'm sure it would have sentimental value. I think the question is, "Is this the best use of our resources?" Good luck with your decision!

    1. I know we can afford it. I don't really know of anything else we need to spend money on. I will pray about it!

  4. I think diamonds are pretty but for me, they are not practical. I hate wearing jewelery except for a watch and post earrings. I just have a wedding band - they just get in my way.

If you can afford it, then go for it. If you can't and it's on credit...why?

    1. My husband has always been tight with money, so this is a big deal for him. If I got it I would wear it. Like you I don't wear jewelry. I have never really gotten into it. I always wear the ring I have now, so I would wear it.

  6. I am not a big jewelry wearer either! I have a friend that keeps buying me pieces and I feel bad because I never wear them. Finally I just had to tell her I don't wear the stuff.

I read your post twice to get the emotional feelings behind the reason why your hubby wants to buy this for you. And Betty, I have only started reading your blog, but I raised my son on my own too - and if my (one day to be) hubby wanted to do this for me for that reason, I would go for it and let him buy this. Why? He wants to do this for you - out of his love for you, out of appreciation for where you came from and what you have gone thru before, and for the HUGE significance that I know this time of your life (with your son now grown) means to you.

I know (and understand) that jewelry usually does not mean much to you - but even down the road - that is when you will remember the significance of why your hubby wants to do this for you. But that is just me talking! This brought tears to my eyes actually. :)

    1. My son belongs to the two of us and we have raised him together. My older children's dad died when they were pretty young and I raised the three of them by myself.

I really think it means something to him to be able to buy the diamond for me. He is excited about the chance to do it.

    2. Sorry I misunderstood Betty. :)

It is so nice that he is excited about wanting to buy the diamond for you.

    3. That's okay! I just don't understand putting money into things like that, but sometimes I think I need to let him do things that make him happy. He never wants things for himself, he likes to give us things.

  7. I'm with most everyone else- pray about it. God will either bring another opportunity for that kind of money to be spent or he will place it on your heart to allow your hubby to buy it for you.

    1. I think you're right. I am starting to feel like I should let him buy it.

  8. I told my hubby to take back the diamond earrings he got me one year for Christmas. I don't wear much jewelry. I wanted tools as I was making lots of wooden frames at the time. He promised me my own work bench and I was sooooooooooo disappointed he got something as unimaginative as diamonds. I disagree that they're a girls best friend, and it will never be like your engagement ring...it won't have that type of emotional feeling. I agree with coffee lady, it's not practical and I like practical. I don't think it's much of an investment...it's only an investment if you sell it. Why not suggest a nice trip instead.

    1. I would love to take a trip, but I think I will leave it up to him whether he buys it or not. He loves me and sometimes it might just be important for him to show it in his own way. I don't want him to feel unappreciated.

  9. Amy, you are right. It means a lot to him to be able to do this. My husband is tight with money so if he wants to spend that kind of money on something it is really important to him. I think I will always appreciate the fact that he wanted to spend the money on me.

  10. I don't wear rings. My wedding and engagement bands are very simple (at my request). My parents never wore them so for me the attachment just isn't there. Plus I am really cheap :) However, if rings are something that you enjoy wearing than you should go for it!
