Weight Loss - Should you lose quickly?

Weight Loss - Should you lose quickly? #WeightLoss #Losing Weight

My doctor told me that I should only lose 1 to 2 pounds a month.  I didn't follow directions very well.  I needed to make changes that would allow me to lose more quickly.  I have not had rapid weight loss, but I have lost consistently.

I think most people prefer to lose weight quickly.  Even though it took months or years to get to their current weight, they want to get to their goal weight in weeks.  You gain weight by eating more or by eating the wrong types of food, so it makes sense that if you reverse that you would lose the weight.

I really don't know if it's better to lose fast or slow.  If you take it slow I feel like it gives you time to totally change your habits.  If you lose too fast do you really have time to learn new eating habits?

If you don't lose fast enough sometimes you get discouraged and quit.

In your experience, which way it best?  Have you lost fast or slow?
Have you kept it off long term?

Here is my record of weight loss.

  1. I don't know which is best either... this time I have lost it quickly... however; I have also incorporated exercise and I have changed my eating habits for life. It was important for me to not just live like this until I got the weight off... I will eat like this and exercise like this for life :)

  2. I have lost 50 lbs in the past quickly, and gained it all back, then gained another 50. And many other times as well, lost some weight quickly, then gave up, gained it back. So in my mind, slow and steady wins the race.

  3. You are consistently losing a regular amount of weight, which many people lack the discipline to do. (He said as he looked in the mirror) I think you are losing rapidly, though not too rapidly. Biggest Loser Contestant rapid is 5 to 10 pounds per week. I wonder how many of those former contestants have unresolved saggy skin issues, and what percentage of former contestants have regained the weight?

  4. I think it depends on how much you have to lose. When you are obese it is probably going to come off fast at first but you don't want to lose 10 pounds in a week! I think shooting for 1-2 pounds a week is fine!

  5. I think it matters not how FAST it is lost, but HOW it is lost! Is one eating healthy? Then I say lose as fast as your body allows. Is one not eating truly healthy but on a 'fad' diet of restrictions that they can never keep up? Then forget it! Healthy is the only way to go. :)

  6. Man I loved that chart. I could see you fist pump on the weeks you lost much, and maybe even scowl on weeks you gained it back. I'm glad you gained back on vacation - and got right back to work when you got back!

    Inspirational, this.

  7. Awesome, you are doing great! I agree it is better to lose weight slower. In this manner you can instill good habits and keep them.

  8. 1-2 pounds month seems excessively slow. I have always heard that the accepted 'healthy' rate of losing is 1-2 pounds a WEEK! Just make sure you are eating healthy and getting the nutrients you need and you will be fine!> :-)
